Revamp at Kidderminster’s historic ‘piano building’ signed off

Works to refurbish a grade-two listed former wool warehouse in Kidderminster have been completed by contractor Speller Metcalfe.

The Piano Building, on Weavers Wharf, was purchased by Wyre Forest District Council in 2024 – who kicked off a renovation scheme in September 2024, following the award of £17.9m from the UK government’s levelling up fund.

Work was completed on site this month.

The building now features 29,000 sq ft of commercial space, which owners Wyre Forest District Council say will offer modern offices, alongside commercial opportunities for food and drink businesses.

Refurbishment works completed on the scheme included upgrades to heating and lighting systems, as well as repairs to windows which had sustained damage while the building stood empty.

Mark Hudgeon, regional director at Speller Metcalfe, said the firm was proud to have played a part in bringing new life to the Piano Building.

“Its transformation is a brilliant example of how heritage and modern design can work hand in hand to create a vibrant space for businesses and the community,” he said.

“It’s been a pleasure working alongside Wyre Forest District Council to deliver a project that celebrates the town’s history while supporting its exciting future.”

The building was originally constructed by carpet firm Brintons in 1867, and was previously home to the Kidderminster campus of Birmingham Metropolitan College, which closed in 2019.

It takes its name from its distinctive curved profile, gained due to a land dispute over a watercourse running through the site around 150 years ago, which resembles a grand piano when viewed from above.

Councillor Marcus Hart, Leader of Wyre Forest District Council, added: “The Piano Building has been given a new lease of life – it’s now a contemporary, welcoming space that still respects its historic character.

“This transformation supports our wider vision for the town, helping drive Kidderminster’s regeneration and supporting local economic growth. We’re proud to see this important part of our heritage being used in such a positive and forward-looking way.”

Architects for the project were Worcester-firm One Creative Environments, with consultancy provided by Gleeds of Birmingham.
