Thumbs up for ten-storey Highgate apartment block

More than 100 new homes will be built on an overgrown industrial site on a street corner in east Birmingham, after developer Home Nation reached an agreement on affordable housing targets with the city council.

The scheme proposed by the Birmingham-based firm would see a ten-storey building constructed on the site of a former factory unit on the corner of Bradford Street and Moseley Road.

Two vacant retail buildings would be demolished to make way for the development, at numbers 5 and 9 on Moseley Road, which also borders Bradford Court, a 19th century factory which has been converted for use as business offices.

The site gained planning permission for an eight-storey block in 2021, with the revised proposals set to add 26 apartments to the scheme, taking the total to 104.

A total of 8 units would be allocated as affordable homes as part of the scheme, following discussions with the city council.

“This revised proposal by Home Nation Ltd would seek to provide new homes of the highest design quality reflective of modern urban living at the forefront of sustainable residential design,” said a statement submitted with the proposals.

“This is intended to be a high-quality scheme and will improve the quality of housing in the area and the appearance of the Bradford Street in general.”

The application was provisionally green-lit at a city council planning committee in December, with a subsequent S106 agreement leading to a formal decision notice this week.

Architects for the proposals were city-based BG Projects, with planning consultancy provided by Plan Associates.

Plans and documents relating to the application can be found on Birmingham City Council’s planning portal using reference: 2023/07288/PA
