Derby A514 road upgrade to get £3m boost
Major upgrades to a trunk route into an East Midlands city centre will get under way in January, as part of work to support a planned 4,500-home residential development.
Work to increase capacity on the A514 Chellaston Road, at the junction with Merrill Way and Boulton Lane, is expected to last for around seven months.
The improvements form part of road capacity upgrades to support the huge South Derby Growth Zone scheme, set to include the Infinity Garden Village and around 3.5m square feet of employment floorspace along the A50 corridor to the south of the city.
Around £3m has been made available by the East Midlands Combined County Authority for the scheme, with further funding from developers Infinity Park Derby.
Claire Ward, Mayor the East Midlands, said: “Improving transport connections across Derby and our region is a key priority for me, and this investment in the A514 junction is a great example of that commitment in action.
“By increasing capacity, supporting reliable public transport and making it safer and easier for people to walk and cycle, this scheme will support local growth while helping to create a more sustainable transport network for the future.”
The combined authority has also provided funding for improvements on London Road, a key corridor into the city, and refurbishment of traffic lights.
Survey works on this route will take place in February between Deadman’s Avenue and Brighton Road to help inform a future scheme aimed at improving facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, and buses, Derby City Council says.
